With nine gallery spaces and a large lawn suitable for public art, AAC is one of the largest non-federal venues for contemporary art in the area. Through quarterly changing exhibitions, AAC serves as a launching pad for emerging artists, provides established artists with the opportunity to experiment, and offers the public a snapshot of the region’s most compelling contemporary art.

Once a year, AAC announces a call for proposals for its SOLOS exhibitions. The submissions are reviewed by our rotating exhibitions committee, which includes notable artists, critics, curators, and collectors. Each of the selected artists, hailing from around the Mid-Atlantic region, mounts a self-contained show in one of seven separate gallery spaces, resulting in a cross-section of innovative art across a variety of media.

AAC also presents themed group exhibitions organized either by our Director of Exhibitions or by prominent guest curators. These shows typically explore challenging and timely topics, and bring a diverse range of accomplished artists from the regional, national, and even international arena to Arlington.

AAC’s exhibitions and attendant lectures, workshops, and panel discussions offer opportunities for dialogue, and ultimately serve to illustrate the value of contemporary art – specifically, what it is and why it matters in our daily lives.
